Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and compulsive behaviors that are performed to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsessions. OCD can interfere with daily activities and affect a person’s ability to function. A comprehensive approach is required to manage OCD effectively.
Pharmacologic treatments for OCD typically include SSRIs, which help regulate serotonin levels in the brain and reduce the frequency and intensity of obsessions and compulsions. Medications such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and sertraline are commonly prescribed. In some cases, other medications may be used to manage symptoms.
Nonpharmacologic treatments for OCD include Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that helps patients gradually confront their fears and resist performing compulsive behaviors. ERP is considered the gold standard for OCD treatment. In addition, mindfulness-based therapies and relaxation techniques can support the reduction of anxiety and obsessive thoughts. We work with you to find the best combination of therapy and medication to help you regain control over your life.
